Creating a Scottish atmosphere outwith Scotland is something you have to get *just* right ... the Canadians do it rather well; the Australians rather over-egg the pudding and finish up *too* Scottish ... like 'a Gretna souvenir shop' my son-in-law (from Edinburgh) says.

But, this sounds good! Just hope it's still as you remember it.

Hi Viv,

Thank you for your musings on annual coffee day in Vienna. I love Stephansdom, we went there often in 2006, usually to light a candle for Pa and hear the choir singing.

When I was backpacking in 1984 I climbed the stairs up to see the view from St Stephans and, I have no idea why, but I attempted to 'frisbee' my hat to friends down below in the Square. Unfortunately it got caught on the roof in between the spires!! I have always wondered what became of it!

I shall think of this every time I see a pavement artist or an ice sculpture (oe even a snowman!). I'm always struck with worder at how much work goes into creating something so ephemeral.

A good story

GK Chesterton: “The poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese.”

Voila: www.tastingtoeternity.com. This book is a poetic view of 30 of the best loved French cheeses with an additional two odes to cheese. Recipes, wine pairing, three short stories and an educational section complete the book.

From a hectic life on Wall Street to the peace and glories of the French countryside lead me to be the co-founder of www.fromages.com. Ten years later with the words of Pierre Androuet hammering on my brain:

“Cheese is the soul of the soil. It is the purest and most romantic link between humans and the earth.”

I took pen and paper; many reams later with the midnight oil burning Tasting to Eternity was born and self published.

I believe cheese and wine lovers should be told about this publication.

Enjoy.

Hi Viv

I found this very interesting especially as you were able to see them creating the mandalas. The impermanence of everything is very core to Buddhism, as is the non attachment.

But, the French still snigger when they see a 'cul de sac' so why not?

Chere Madame d' Initiative de Rouen,
Bien Sur!
I hasten to assure you that we totally agree that your beautiful city has no resemblance to any ruins that we know of.
I am very happy that you pointed out that possible misunderstanding and can reassure you that no readers will be thinking of ruins.
