The Silver Gypsies are me, Vivienne Mackie, and my husband Rod Mackie. We’ve traveled a lot much of our lives and seem to be doing much more travel in recent years. How lucky is that?!
We are nomads with a home. Gypsies without a trailer. We tend not to spend any disposable income on things like new furniture or furnishings, a new car, fashionable clothes, hi-tech entertainment systems etc. Rather, it goes to travel—-anywhere and everywhere—as an adventure, as further education, as a way of trying to understand this world of ours and all the various cultures and customs in it. Travel is one of the most mind-braodening experiences possible, also the most humbling at times, but also so rewarding.
We both love trying out new foods and often a day in our travels will center around the meals. We are also passionate about wines and like nothing more than to tootle around the vineyards and taste the wine in the local wineries in different countries. We’ve quite often planned a whole trip around the wine country in that place. Crazy maybe, but we love museums and spend hours wandering in them. We also love discovering the music of a local place and how it reflects that culture.
So….lots to keep us busy, exploring and learning. Many times we travel with family members and the inter-generational aspect of that is also a wonderful learning experience. But often it’s just the two of us. It’s often said that the test of a relationship is if the couple involved can travel together. Well, we’ve obviously passed with flying colors, as we’re still at it 40+ years later!
All these trips, whether locally, to another state in the USA, or to another country, generate so many interesting travel stories, snippets, recipes, and photos that it was getting hard to keep them all organized in my regular blog—-Around and About with Viv. This is especially true for slightly longer articles and stories, some of which I’m lucky enough to have published but some of which need another home. So….here that home is.
