Paris, summer 2011
Not Forbidden Fruit, but Forbidden Lawn
Many of the public gardens and parks in Paris (and also throughout France) are a strange paradox: On the one hand you will see signs like this one, saying “Keep off the Lawn/Grass”, while on the other hand many parks allow people to lie on the grass, to picnic, to laze on it, to play—-which they love to do. Many parks and gardens also provide metal chairs, often strategically placed around a fountain or a pond, for people to rest on, snooze on, read a book, or eat their lunch.
C’est la vie!
