The city of Sapporo has a wonderful park, Odori Park, that stretches about 1.8 km east-west through the center of the city. It’s a delightful area, with the TV Tower at one end (looks like a mini Eiffel Tower) and many flowers gardens, fountains, and outdoor sculptures. Local people flock here at all times of the year and it’s used for all kinds of special festivals. Dotted along the edge we find some of these smoking places—-great to see that here in the park smoking is not permitted except in these regulated places.
But what is kinda incongruous is that many restaurants, bars and cafes still either permit smoking anywhere on the premises or have a smoking section! So, the outdoor fresh air is kept fresh but the indoor air quality is not. And we’ve found that an awful lot of Japanese people still do smoke—-old, young, male, female. Go figure!
The man exiting the smoke house was quite embarrassed and came over to me and offered to take my picture!
